Review: Enduring Service by Regina Morris

4 Stars

Colony Agent Sulie Metcalf, the President’s private physician, has been in love with the same human man for nearly thirty years. She refuses to allow herself the joy of true love because her feelings are unrequited by her human boss, Jonathan Dixon. As Dixon’s retirement looms near, and his memories of Sulie and the last thirty years of his life are about to be erased, does she confront her fear of intimacy and take a leap of faith before it’s too late? Dixon has decided to retire and enjoy what time he has left. When his best friend Sulie, a vampire team member, is kidnapped during a medical emergency, Dixon realizes that retirement means giving up everything, and everyone, he’s known for the last three decades. Will he risk his life, and his heart, to save her?

My Thoughts; I had the privilege of meeting this author sometime ago. The Colony series was in it's early days and I was honored to be contacted for review. I read book one and immediately fell in love with this cast of characters Regina Morris had created.

When I began the series, I think I was most curious to see how Sulie's story would turn out. It was clear from the very beginning that she was in love with Dixon. You could also see that Dixon was quite fond of her in return but the "love" Sulie had for him was slipping through her fingertips as his retirement draws closer and her days with him are numbered.

There is so much that happens just on the personal side for these characters but when you add in the story line and conflicts along the way you are met with a spectacular balance. From the "Happily Ever After" we want in the end, to the rush and adrenaline we all crave as we get there. We see so many details from the past coming into play and with each revelation you can't help but want more. There is one character in particular that I believe we will be seeing in the future books but only time will tell..

Regina Morris is not only an excellent story teller she is also a delight to work with. I had the privileged of being part of the editing process for this book and I can not begin to tell you how honored I was to know she trusted me with Sulie and Dixon. Thank you so much Regina and best of luck on their release.

Happy Reading!! :)

My thoughts; WOW, just wow. I can not believe I am once again sitting here struggling to put all of my thoughts into words. At this point I am determined to think Colleen Hoover in incapable of writing a bad book. I sorta wish she would, just so I can finally be convinced that she is an actual human being. Again.... WOW.

There are two things that I have always connected to on an emotional level, books and music. It never fails when I am in a certain mood I relate to one song or another and I can hear my own feelings being put to music. And then, reading.... my passion, what makes me tick, what gets me through all the bad days and keeps me smiling on the good ones. I could never put into words (maybe a light pun intended) how I feel on some days but these two things never fail me.

That being said, Colleen Hoover (and Griffin Peterson of course *swoony sigh*) has taken those two things and made them ONE. I don't think I have ever experienced this level of emotion while reading, ever. I don't know that I can say this is the best book I have ever read, but I can tell you that this is by far my most epic reading experience to date. To have a book not only grab your heart and sense of imagination with the story but also your sense of hearing and deep emotion with the music that accompanies it. Again.... WOW.

I don't want to say a lot as far as the story line is concerned because I feel like each person should learn every new detail as they read, and listen to the words of each song. From the first moment Sydney sits on her balcony listening to him play, to the first text, to the very last line of this book. I hope you all can feel that without spoilers and without preconceived ideas.

Happy Reading!! :)

Review - Edge of Always by J.A. Redmerski

4 Stars

Five months ago, Camryn and Andrew, both dealing with personal hardships, met on a Greyhound bus. They fell in love and proved that when two people are meant to be together, fate will find a way to make it happen.

Now, in the highly anticipated sequel to The Edge of Never, Camryn and Andrew are pursuing their love for music and living life to the fullest as they always swore to do. But when tragedy befalls them, their relationship is put to the ultimate test. As Camryn tries to numb her pain, Andrew makes a bold decision: To get their life back on track, they'll set out on another cross-country road trip. Together they find excitement, passion, adventure-and challenges they never could have anticipated.

My thoughts: I read Edge of Always (book one) and fell completely in love with these characters. They made me laugh, they made me sob and most of all they made me wanna run away on a road trip of complete and total spontaneity. When I heard there would be a book two in this series I was a bit apprehensive. I was happy with the way book one ended and I just wanted to keep that moment alive in my mind.

I put off reading this for a pretty long time but I finally caved and said, "Okay, suck it up! Read the dang book." I took my advice and at first I was really upset; my biggest fears about reading it were realized and everything was suddenly up in the air, emotions were everywhere, this happy ending that I thought I had gotten was tarnished. I was a mess.

As I continued to read, I actually found myself falling in love with them all over again. It wasn't new exactly, just different. They were different, their lives were different and that was okay. In the end I am very glad that I caved and read it. While I didn't love it the same as I did book one it was a fitting close to this two part series.

Review: Pretty Little Things by Teresa Mummert

4.5 Stars

I was young enough not to understand that my life was different. Colin became the one person that I could count on to protect me. He suffered for the both of us by carrying the burden of our secret.

We were the lucky few that got a chance to start over. A fake family, a new home and a pretty little life built on lies. But while our lives continued to intertwine, we were put on very different paths. Now it was only a matter of time before they collide and the beast behind the beauty is exposed.

My Thoughts: I have been following Teresa Mummert's work for quite a while now. I am a huge fan, and I have been slowly working my way through all of her books. Watching her posts (via facebook) on this particular book coming together was actually pretty fun. It was pretty much love at first cover sighting. It is beautiful to say the least but you just KNOW it is hiding a dark secret deep within its pages.

I started this book with pretty high expectations and I was not disappointed. It was well and beautifully written. I could tell right from the start that Colin was going to be that "anti-hero" type of character that I enjoy from time to time, but I could also see a vulnerability to him as well. Annie is an innocent, that is pretty clear from the very beginning but she is by no means "soft". She can push every single button Colin has without even speaking a single word.

The multiple POV in this book gives it just the right amount of depth and dimension without making you feel bombarded with excess story-line. You feel the dark, twisted, and maybe even forbidden aspect of this story page after page and no matter how much you think maybe this shouldn't happen, you can't help but bite your nails in anticipation.

I love when a book gives me the butterfly tummy and so far, Teresa Mummert has not failed me there. I look forward to reading more from her in the future. And I would recommend her to anyone who likes a quick read with tantalizing story lines.

Pretty Little Things Excerpt (Wounds Scene)

“What are your plans for the day, little one?” I asked, and she startled.
“I have a report I need to finish on the adverse effects of corporal punishment used on children.” I laughed and shook my head, my eyes going back to the television. “Yeah, so that will be fun. But if Connor and Grace aren't back, I can always skip school tomorrow.”
“Not a chance.”
“I wasn't asking.”
I looked over at her, her eyebrow raised in challenge.
“You had a private tutor.”
“I had antisocial tendencies and a habit of challenging authority.” I laughed as the credits rolled on the screen in front of us.
“I don’t doubt that.”
We fell silent as we both sat, unmoving. “So this guy…” I let my voice trail off.
“He’s just a guy.” She shrugged as she pulled on a loose thread on the blanket.
“Is he a good guy?”
“Are you?” she shot back.
“That’s a loaded question.” I stood up, stretching, and when I looked down at her, her smile fell. “What?”
“Did that hurt?”
I sighed as I thought of the marks that covered my back. “Don’t.” I walked over to the shelves of movies, scanning the titles. I didn't know if it bothered me more that she was asking about them or that she looked upset over my injuries. I was no one for her to feel sorry for. While I’d received them for not doing what I was told, I’d earned them by following through with the orders. But answering that question perplexed me. If you take a child and never show him affection, any attention received is positive in his eyes. Coupling that with the twisted abusive behavior and dominance that was instilled in me so young, I learned to derive gratification from receiving pain as well as giving. It was a release, a way to atone for my sins.
She stood and walked up to my side. My scars should have been a warning to not get close to someone like me, but Annabel saw my dominant side as a reflection of my overprotective nature toward her. My eyes closed as her hand ran softly over my back. Her featherlight touch on my own wounds more painful than when I had received them.
“Annabel, stop,” I bit out, but she continued on, her fingers trailing over the raised welts. My body stiffened, not wanting someone to give me affection I didn't deserve. It turned my stomach, and for once I was completely thrown off guard. So I did what I knew best, and I instilled fear in her.
“I said fucking stop,” I seethed as I grabbed her by her shoulders and slammed her small body against the movies, causing the shelves to shake. Her green eyes were wide with fright, and now I was the one desperate to touch. Her fear was palpable, and while I knew I was pushing away the one person who even remotely began to understand me, it was for her own good. She didn't have to understand as long as she listened. But listening to me was something Annabel rarely did anymore. She’d become too comfortable in my presence, and now she ignored the alarms that would set a normal person on edge. That was what terrified me about her seeing this guy. I had no idea what kind of person he was, but I knew Annie wouldn't be as cautious as she should be.
“Annabel…” I rested my forehead against the case, my body hovering over hers, caging her in with my arms on her shoulders. Her name came out like a plea for help.
“I-I’m sorry.”
I lifted my head and looked at her. The fear-induced stutter let me know I had succeeded in making her understand.
I took a step back from her, running my hand along my jaw before turning and leaving the room, desperate to put distance between us.

Also, be sure to read all the way to the bottom for a great giveaway!!

 Publication Date: February 17, 2014

Synopsis

The story of Kate, Kyle and Reed continues in this second novel of The Perfect Series. Kate (Katherine) Monroe is finally coming to heads with the decisions she’s made in the past to keep herself distracted at any cost. Learning to move on and forward with the conflicts in her life is harder than she expects though. With Kyle continuing to attempt reconciliation and Kate’s mom back at home, avoiding and running are no longer an option.
All along Kate’s mind and heart are consumed with Reed, but she fights to push her feelings and desires to the side. Despite the obvious pull and connection she has with Reed she finds it difficult to let him in… and trust in herself. However, Reed’s perseverance and patience never wavers and eventually he uses the one thing that had always brought them together… tennis.
As Reed and Kate begin to embark on a new relationship they face the past and the present head on. Along the way, new challenges and emotions arise testing the direction of their future together.

Can Kate forgive herself and trust Reed in order to latch onto the one emotion she needs most… love?

About the Author

Melissa Rolka grew up in the Chicagoland area all of her childhood and has always had a love of writing. She started by keeping a journal at a young age and then in high school she started writing poetry. A couple poems were published anonymously. Then in college she majored in Philosophy, which required lots and lots of writing. After graduating from Marquette University she traveled west to Los Angeles. There she worked for the Writers Guild of America and found herself submerged in the writers world. She worked on small writings, but never pursued them. On the side she became involved with a small theater group. Eventually she made her way back to the Midwest, where her heart belongs, and worked in business for several years. She found love, got married and has two beautiful children. Being at home has allowed her to keep following her love of reading and writing.

The Perfect Distraction is her first full length novel. A second continuation of this story is in the works with hopes for a third. When Melissa is not writing she is caring for, playing with and loving her two kids. In between taking care of her family and writing she almost always has her nose buried in her Kindle.

4 Stars

My thoughts; I was left with my heart falling out of my chest at the end of book one. I wanted it to end on a calmer note with the characters and their relationship issues in a semi-resolved state. But instead I get a big ol' cliffhanger. Luckily, (being I was late to the series) I didn't have to wait long for book two.

When The Perfect Emotion begins my heart is still broken and the crack gets bigger as I realize how much time has passed between book one and two. It has been months and I am devastated. In my head I had them working on everything in a matter of days. I saw Reed storming off on his white horse and rescuing Kate from her emotional despair. Also, in my head, I am very dramatic. ^_^

I fell so in love with Kate and Reed as a couple during book one that I knew I could not be happy unless they were together. Reed may have been a bit of a playboy before he met Kate but most of the books guys I fall for were. That being said he is DEVOTED to her 100% and I love that

When the two finally come back into the same room, you just KNOW that things are going to be okay. They may need time to become PERFECT and they may need time to understand each other better but they will. And let's face it when Reed says this.....

....I literally swooned. He is pretty much the PERFECTION in the title. He could not be a more perfect male if he were created from someone's imagination and written.... oh wait..... moving on.

I was happy with the way this book ended. The characters are in a good place, they are open and honest with each other. No more secrets or abandonment issues. However, the Epilogue has me curious about the dynamic of  Book 3. Will the main characters still be Kate and Reed or will we be reading from a whole new character POV. Nothing to do now except wait and see. If you have yet to read this serious, I highly recommend.

Happy Reading!! :)

Excerpt

Chapter 14 Excerpt

“Jesus, Katherine,” he mumbles as I kiss my way across his jaw and over to his ear.  “What are you doing to me?”
“Kissing you,” I whisper in his ear and brush my lips against his ear lobe.
“Mmmmm hmmmm.”  His hands move to my waist and guide me onto him.  I’m straddling his lap and his fingers dig into my hips.  I rush my hands into his hair and his head presses all the way against the couch, the leather giving in to my demands.  Our tongues clash against each other exploring as if it’s our first kiss, yet knowingly anticipating our next ridge or groove.  My heart races in ways I never knew possible.  My hands run down to the hem of his button down shirt and to the top of his pants.  I start to pull at his shirt to un-tuck it, but his hands come around and lock around my wrists restraining me from pulling anymore.  I whine into his mouth.
“Why?”  I mumble against the softness of his lips and smile.
“This is the first time I’m in your house and I just met your parents… maybe the second time,” he jokes and then nibbles on my bottom lip.
“Grrrrr,” I grumble in his mouth.  “You are always being too good.”  His eyes narrow at me and he let’s out a rough chuckle.
“Katherine, I think you know that’s not true and I’ll show you just how bad I am when we are back up at school.”  His hands snake up to my shoulders wrapping around the back of my neck.  Pulling me towards him and his lips find mine again.  Softly he kisses me across my jaw to my ear.  “Patience,” he whispers.
“I don’t want to be patient,” I pout as I push my body into him.  He laughs into me and un-straddles me from his lap.  We face each other and I smile shyly at him feeling a little funny by my boldness.
“Stop,” he says, and his hand latches onto my pinky finger gently rubbing it.  “Don’t be embarrassed.  I don’t like you having to be patient either,” he says, just before he plants a firm kiss to my forehead.  I lean myself against him and rest my head on his chest.  His arms wrap around me tightly making my insecurities fade.  As I take in his familiar pine and masculine scent he shifts us back against the arm of the couch allowing me to snuggle myself even closer.
